Johnny
– The Work of Psychedelic Artist John Hurford
Edited by Jonathan Hill (Sunrise Press)
If, at any time in the sixties or early seventies, you found yourself wreathed in a fug of dope smoke whilst gazing dreamily at a poster (or indeed a page in Oz, Gandalf’s Garden or International Times magazines) featuring incredibly intricate Tolkienesque fantasy landscapes full of goblins, insects and, more often than not, naked ladies, then chances are you’ve seen the work of John Hurford - those with even the most passing acquaintance with the British psychedelic art movement of the Sixties will certainly know his work - work celebrated in some style in this weighty tome. Collecting together for the first time hundreds of examples of his paintings, drawings, posters and book illustrations this retrospective amounts to a lifetime's work dating from 1964 to the present day. The influence Hurford had on those that followed cannot be over emphasised, and this will doubtless be pored over by artists both young and old, but for the rest of us this is simply a beautiful book, lovingly presented and an absolute joy from beginning to end. It is also worth noting that the cover scan does the book no favours at all and you can find rather more enticing images
here. You can order a copy of Johnny for £35 plus £4.95p p&p (Total £39.95p - cheque payable to
"Sunrise Press") from Sunrise
Press, 13 Belmont Road, Exeter, Devon EX1 2HF.
